We are Cyber Security and Technology consultants. We are also partners/resellers of Vembu BDRSuite backup products. We use Vembu BDRSuite in our organization and four of our clients are using Vembu BDRSuite. Three of our clients need simplified disk-to-disk-to-cloud backups and one is using cloud M365.
  • Easy to install and configure
  • Backups are granular for easy recovery
  • Low resource overhead
  • User interface on the servers do not have enough tools to better monitor the systems and finding information is difficult.
  • User interface at portal is difficult to navigate and confusing
  • Support documentation is too generic and rarely answers my questions.
  • Licensing and acquisition. As a reseller and partner the licensing model is confusing and the portal interface to manage licensing should be scrapped and rebuilt. It is difficult to navigate and the available information is too vague.
  • Recently, communication with new channel contact. My previous contact was articulate and answered my questions.
  • Did I mention licensing? This is the most confusing and difficult process I've dealt with in 25 years. Makes Microsoft look simple.
This product is great for small businesses who need a cost effective, efficient, and simple method preserving data and disaster recovery for information this product does not provide more details on backups and of enough information to troubleshoot issues.

I run a small, one-man software development company. I have two physical Hyper-V servers hosting a total of eight VMs, three of them servers with two of those Active Directory Domain Controllers. I use BDRSuite to back up all of those VMs to local hardware nightly. BDRSuite gives me the confidence I need to ensure my essential data is safe and can be restored in the event of an unexpected data disaster.
  • Excellent support.
  • Good documentation.
  • Ease of use.
  • Reliability
  • High compression ratio.
  • A visually appealing dashboard is needed, displayed at console startup, providing an easily read snapshot view of the system's overall state.
  • The UX for creating a new backup job can be confusing, particularly during the guest access steps.
I only use the software for a limited scope of its capabilities, but I'm able to report that it works quite well for nightly VM backups.

I use BDRSuite on the servers for my clients. They are my primary go-to for backup purposes. I set up my clients' servers in a Windows Server Hyper-V environment. BDRSuite backs up each of the VMs on each of my servers and sends me reports of its successes/failures daily. When an issue comes up and I can't resolve it personally - Vembu's technical support team is prompt to respond. Sometimes it takes longer than others for them to get to the bottom of an issue but they will stay on the case until the issue is resolved.
  • Backup my entire server and VMs in Hyper-V
  • Sync offsite to other remotely located servers
  • Provides backup reliability reports
  • Language barrier when dealing with issues
  • Time zone issues with support
  • Not all support agents are thoroughly trained and they need to escalate often
I use Vembu's BDRsuite exclusively for my Hyper-V servers for my clients. I have been with them for the past 5+ years and plan on continuing.

  • Backup a Baremetal Server and Restore
  • Email Reports with useful information
  • Their documentation needs improvement both from a base framework perspective and from a version-to-version perspective.
  • error messages that aren't helpful or documentation that isn't for the new version.
  • The uninstallation and reinstallation process should be smoother if you're attempting to do a repair because a version update broke something
  • When upgrading, sometimes the agent on the target server needs upgrading but doesn't auto-upgrade and so you have to dig through older versions' documentation to find the command to uninstall and then reinstall.
  • Restoring a Domain Controller causes issues that aren't documented as possibilities. The issues aren't related to the DC, but due to the way, the restore is done which effect DCs specifically.
Back up 10 VMs with the free version/trial and perform restores or backup a single physical server such as a domain controller. The ability to trial a product for a long period of time allows for real-world use cases to occur where you can see the strengths and weaknesses of the product.

The review for Vembu Backup and disaster recovery solution is one the best all-in-one suite packages. It's very rare to get such a combination of features in one goes at a reasonable price, I highly recommend the BDR.Vembu is in use on daily basis in my environment, from file backup, and application backup to Microsoft Hyper-V image backup. On top of this, we also include the Offsite BDR as well which is an add-up solution that guarantees the safety of your data storage.
  • Quick and straightforward implementation procedures.
  • Backup speed and accuracy of data.
  • Image integrity check report feature for image servers like Hype-V and others.
  • Easy data recovery once needed.Strong backup encryption features.
  • Strong backup encryption features.
  • The file backup feature for the new Mac OS still has hiccups.
  • The new version 15 dashboard is good but it missing important information like when will be next backup schedule, only the last successful shows.
  • The administrator is not able to remove an old ID from the dashboard.
Vembu BDR is successful to combine all necessary backup features needed, from local file backup to cloud computing solutions like AWS and Microsoft Azure. The new upgrades to fix small bugs takes long time to be released, instead fresh installation comes first.

My Vembu BDR Suite Review

Score 6 out of 10
Vetted Review
ResellerIncentivized
We use Vembu BDR Suite to backup physical servers, HyperV VMs, and workstation in a combination of the full image and file backups. We also install and manage Vembu for a number of our clients. It is a comprehensive package but has a bit of a learning curve to understand and use. A key element is the ability to boot and image backup as a VM for disaster recovery and to add a level of ransomware recovery. Recovery of individual files is fairly simple but would like to have the facility at the client level so users could restore files from backup without IT intervention. The granular recovery of SQL data is essential and supported. Vembu offers a free version that allows potential users to become familiar with the product before opting for the paid features. During the trial period, all features are available. For many small businesses and Sole Proprietors, the Free version was sufficient but now has a limitation of 10 endpoint backups which has reduced the enthusiasm. One issue we have is that the combination of Postgresql and Vembu components can make the server fragile to run in production.
  • VM and Physical machine backup - Boot as VM for DR recovery
  • Granular restore
  • Image backup client implementation now done from the server console. Do not have to go to the client workstation to run the installation.
  • DR backup to an off-site system
  • Recovery boot tool needs to be USB. At this time it requires a CD/DVD to be created. A clean bootable USB image file should be made available for download.
  • Access to all downloads from Vembu main download page. Should not have to install Vembu to gain access to client installers.
  • File backup fails if a file is in use such as Outlook.pst file. This is problematic for users that have Outlook permanently open. Backup reports show as failed, partial. This is essential to address as we have to do full image backups at a cost to backup storage space when it is not essential.
  • As an IT integrator, we need products that offer a recurring income to build a viable revenue stream. Vembu only offers a commission on the initial purchase of a subscription. Subsequent renewals do no qualify. This factor means that we are not incentivized to really recommend Vembu when other equally good backup solutions are available with long term commission plans.
Vembu suits DR requirements but needs constant monitoring and management. Linux-based clients will find the Linux implementation more difficult. A configured Linux VM appliance for download would be preferred.
Not suited to small business without experienced IT support. A small business will often use a Win 10 workstation to run the backups as Windows server can be out of the budget. This configuration has issues with drive limitations Vembu tends to be more problematic.

We use Vembu BDR Suite across our organization and implement it at client sites. It addresses all of our backup and DR needs by providing a consistent console, the ability to backup bare metal, VMs, all the way down to single files and database entries. It solves an issue we had before with not being able to easily backup client data directly to our data center. Vembu BDR Suite makes this really simple and efficient.
  • Seed an offsite backup. A simple checkbox to seed a large backup prior to backing it up to our datacenter. Previously with another well knows backup provider this was convoluted and time-consuming.
  • Backup Speed. Vembu BDR is fast and allows me to schedule multiple jobs within time constraints that prohibit some backup products from working.
  • DR - Vembu BDR provides an option to mirror your backups to an offsite datacenter without taxing production servers with a secondary backup job.
  • Bare Metal Recovery: the ability to create a custom bootable ISO that you can quickly recover a failed physical server or workstation.
  • Ease of use: The console is consistent and very easy to use. From initial install to being fully configured takes just a few minutes.
  • Restoring VMs. Version 4.x restores a recovered VM in a default location that cannot be modified. That's annoying, especially when you have a standard for your VM locations. I can move them afterward but that's an additional step that takes additional time. I believe this is resolved in the upcoming V5 release.
  • Depending on the backup job you are creating, you can't select the repository for that specific backup. You must make sure you set the repository you want as Default prior to setting up the job.
  • The ability to backup the same physical hard drive to multiple local storage devices should be an option and allowed.
  • Although the bare metal bootable ISO is a nice feature, it needs to be able to access the data independently instead of having to restore the data to a location first and then use the boot disk to restore the physical server or workstation. It's basically two restore jobs and if it's many TBs in size, that takes a lot of time and you need to have that extra space available for a temporary location for that first set of data to be placed. It's very rare to have to recover a physical server these days but it happens and waiting for 2 restores for one recovery increases the time needed. I have submitted a request for this feature and I believe they are working on it.
  • I must also note, I believe many if not all of the above are being addressed in Vembu BDR v5 which is due to release soon.
I've been working with nearly every backup program for more than 25 years from small shops to corporations with thousands of users. Vembu BDR [Suite] is a great product for any business, large or small. It is missing a couple of options that maybe the most popular one has but it doesn't prevent protecting your business. When budget is an issue it's by far the best option. Being able to provide it to our clients is an added bonus since that makes it so much easier to manage when everyone is using the same product. When it comes to technical support, I haven't experienced support like Vembu Support in years. They are quick to respond, happy to remotely connect if desired and seem to really understand their product well. Many others I've worked with refuse to help, and send responses that have nothing to do with my question or they simply provide a link to a document and basically tell me to read and figure it out myself. Often that document does not relate to my issue. I've always done my research before contacting support and that kind of response is one of the biggest reasons we decided to look elsewhere and after many trials and deep testing, ultimately switched to Vembu. Vembu has been rock solid, fast, and tech support has been top-notch. The biggest place I would say that VembuBDR is less appropriate is when you have the desire to backup your physical systems to multiple internal storage devices and want a secondary backup as a safety net and don’t want to risk that the backup itself is corrupt or infected and your only other option is a mirrored copy of that data. I know they are working hard on adding features and I’m excited to know version 5 is releasing soon.

Vembu is used in backing up our data in our whole organization. The need for a better compression method for our backup data was essential and we chose Vembu BDR Suite.

  • Compression is far better than competitors
  • Better RTO
  • Better prices for at least the same features and more
  • Vembu BDR Suite should use their own datacenter for cloud backup for better prices

We are a 20+ year distributor for various online backup companies over the years. We now use Vembu BDR Suite as our go to solution to backup VMware, Hyper-V, Windows image, AWS, Office 365, etc for our entire client base. Vembu is very easy to setup, easy to use and easy to support. The price difference between Vembu and our competitors is dramatic.

  • Hyper-V backup
  • Office 365 backup

Vembu's sweet spot is backing up VMware and Hyper-V. Since it is agent-less, deployment is very simple. Vembu can also image any PC/Server on the network. You need an additional PC to be able to image another PC and sometimes that isn't always available.

We use Vembu BDR Suite across our company as our server and data backup solution. Vembu BDR Suite addresses all of our disaster recovery needs.
  • Easy to manage backup and restore
  • Centralized management solution
  • Backup encryption
  • Good versioning of files
  • Web based layout can be tricky
  • Licensing portal is cumbersome
  • Backup alerts can be obnoxious
Vembu BDR Suite is suited to any medium to large organization requiring reliable backups. It is well suited to organizations with offsite hosted servers for disaster recovery and replication. There aren't really any scenarios I wouldn't recommend Vembu BDR Suite for.

We currently use Vembu BDR Suite to back up 12 virtual and two traditional servers. Each of these servers is critical to our business. When I came on with this company they had no sort of backup system for files on their servers. After some research, I chose Vembu BDR Suite to fill that need.
  • File backup and recovery
  • System snapshots
  • Ease of use
  • Could have a little better user interface
  • Make it easier to back up to a network location
Vembu BDR Suite seems to work best when most of your servers are virtual. The system is really easy to set up and configure multiple machines in a virtual environment. You simply sign in using the root password and all of your servers populate. While not really harder, it is simply more time consuming to set up multiple traditional servers.

Our organization is small, so Vembu BDR was used to back up all our server infrastructure but it was also used to back up some demo infrastructure that we used for product demonstration and training. Our infrastructure was all virtual using VMware's Vsphere. The main purpose was for backup and replication to recover in case we lost complete VMs or we needed to recover data that was lost from within a VM.

My main issue with Vembu and the reason why I wouldn't recommend it is because the way it manages the backup volume is complicated and difficult to use. In my case the backup volume was on a shared drive on our storage unit and at some point due to some issues unrelated to Vembu, it lost access to the volume; once remounted we could not use that volume any more and had to create a new one thereby having to redo all the backups.

There are other solutions, equally good that don't have such complications.
  • It is generally easy and straightforward to use
  • The performance was adequate
  • Management of the backup volumes
  • GUI interface
I would only recommend Vembu BDR if there was a problem with other solutions such as Veeam Backup & Replication. On its own, it's not a bad solution but the backup volume system is not very good.

  • The product works and takes backups fairly easy
  • Simple and quick to install and configure
  • Once configured, it doesn't require much maintenance
  • Generally a simple interface
  • Although its interface is simple, a web-only interface for a backup solution isn't recommended as the main interface.
  • Using PostgreSQL as the configuration DB Source is OK. But, the lack of options for the Database isn't OK. Especially on a Windows Environment, admins prefer using a centralized MS SQL Instance, and this is not possible with Vembu.
  • More work needed on SharePoint, Active Directory, and Exchange Restores. All three are critical workloads in almost any infrastructure.
  • Reporting can be greatly improved.
From my experience, Vembu BDR is well suited for environments where a quick, simple backup solution is needed. It's fairly easy to setup and administer, and you can get up to speed quickly. If you have a complex infrastructure with various technologies and tools, say SharePoint Server, Exchange, System Center and Other Microsoft Products, you might have some issues/limitations with restores in some of these products. If you need a free backup product, Vembu offers a Free Edition as well, and its features are compelling when compared to other competitors. Also, the lack of SQL Server support as a configuration database option might be a problem for companies with certain compliance requirements.

We currently use Vembu BDR to backup some of our less-critical servers. It ticks all the boxes for us, in that it's easy to use, provides email notifications on the job status, is easy to install, configure, and manage, and finally, the support team (when needed) has been super-efficient to help assist and resolve the odd issue that arises.
  • Easy To Install and Manage
  • Support Team is Efficient
  • Free!
  • Regularly Updated
  • User Interface
  • Editing Existing Job Schedules
  • Better Reports
Vembu BDR Suite is best suited for any company/organization that is searching for a low-cost backup solution for their servers. We currently use it for less-critical physical servers, and it works really well. I can't comment on when/where it will be less suited, but from what I've seen, Vembu has a range of solutions for small to large corporations, so it looks as if there's a product suitable for every business, regardless of size.

Vembu BDR is used in a wide variety of ways. We use it across the whole organization to backup physical workstations and servers, files and folders, and virtual machines. It's a centralized solution that allows us to reduce downtime for our internal organization as well as our customers.
  • Image backups of workstations and servers
  • File/folder backups
  • Virtual machine backups
  • Replication to off-site locations
  • Support could be better (occasional language barrier).
  • Troubleshooting logs are cryptic; need more natural language explanations.
  • Updating the location of the backup server for clients should be included in client UI, not via CLI commands.
Vembu BDR Suite is especially well-suited for on-site backups for physical workstations, laptops, servers, along with virtual platforms (VMware, Hyper-V), and for replicating backups for off-site disaster recovery.

We use Vembu free edition to backup a single virtual production server in our organisation, this gives us a good known backup of our company data each day. The data doesn't take up much space and when we have needed to use the restore feature we have always got back what we needed.
  • Nice interface.
  • Easy to use.
  • Fully automated.
  • Email notifications
  • Limited features for free use.
  • Sometimes the service stalls and needs manual intervention.
  • Indexing feature takes some time on complex folders/files.
The Vembu free suite is well suited to virtual hosts backing up a single guest on that operating system, if you require more advanced features and or more virtual server backups you might want to look at their pro version.

  • Vembu Backup has powerful reporting functionality and alerting capability.
  • Vembu Backup benefits from a smart GUI to set up and manage backups and restores from or across systems.
  • In my opinion, there is only one area to improve Vembu Backup and that's the license manager. A good metaphor would be, you can't see the forest through the trees.

Testing of new product software is performed on a single VMWare Server. We use VEMBU to back up the 60+ VM's on that VMWare Server to an external Hard drive.
  • It reports test results via e-mail.
  • We can run reliable backups without bringing VSphere server down.
  • It organizes full and incremental back-ups coherently.
  • Upgrading to new versions is relatively labor-intensive.
  • VMs to be backed up sometimes fail due to a lack of ability to create a snapshot. Vembu should find a way to work around this issue.
  • Supporting external storage (cloud) could be easier to configure, use, and integrate into the back-up processes.

Vembu BDR is used across whole organization both for backups and replicas of VMs. It's being used thoroughly to implement a disaster recovery strategy. In two occasions it has already helped to recover from a disaster occurred.
  • Web interface, it's easy to configure and requires no proprietary client
  • Multiplatform approach
  • Postgres database and not usual Microsoft buggy bloatware
  • Outstanding customer support!!! A++++
  • Missing Linux file level recovery
  • Replicas section needs improvements (already debugging it with customer support) and new features: add of VM to existing replica and merge of two existing replicas.
  • The loss of the BDR VM itself means that in a total disaster scenario restore of the backupped VMs may be cumbersome or impossible: you should copy the strategy of veeam, which allows to import seamlessly an entire backup pool; this can be done, in my opinion, by also making a full postgres DB dump to the backup pool whenever a job completes.
  • Some parts of the web interface should be refined: e.g. the part for email notifications is not enough clear (difference for mails sent for every event and just unsuccessful ones); also, I required as a feature timestamps in 24H format (most of the world is NOT anglosaxon); some actions which are possible in the interface sort out NO EFFECT, like adding a VM to an existing replica, but are yet accepted by the interface; also backup pool section needs refinement, especially to add a new one and to manage existing ones.
  • It should be possible to instruct the software to take advantage of existing LACP network configurations, running parallel processes to speed up data transfer.
  • An improvement of speed of overall throughput would be greatly appreciated.
  • Possibility to backup/replicate BSD (e.g. OpenBSD, FreeBSD) and Solaris VMs
  • PROXMOX support is missing :(((((
Well suited: typical small business mainly windows VMs environment with some linux VMs too but without file level recovery needs, average budget situations

Less appropriate:
-file level recovery for Linux VMs because it does not allow [for this]
-backup/replica of*BSD and Solaris VMs which are currently not possible
-superfast RTO as the software is not particularly optimed for speed

Vembu BDR Suite is used as a backup/recovery, disaster recovery solution and can also be used for Hyper-V and ESXI VM replication and migration. There's an image-based backup client for Windows/Server and Mac, and a file-based backup client for Windows/Server, Mac, and Linux. No client needs to be installed on the hypervisors for backup - you can run the backups directly from the backup server.
  • Fast VM backups
  • Fast image backups
  • Fast file based backups
  • Easy restore options
  • Excellent support with minimal hassle
  • Excellent value
  • I would like image based backups for Linux and FreeBSD.
  • I would like the ability to directly restore an image backup to ESXI or more cross-platform restore options.
  • Managing storage by yourself (without support helping you out) can be tricky. I wish there were easier options to assign storage to users/backups, especially "after the fact."
  • Windows image-based backup needs to assign drive letters to partitions that don't usually have them (system reserved, etc.). There should be a way for the program to identify the drives by different means.
I really can't think of too many scenarios where I would not prefer to use Vembu. I guess I would never sell this to a client for them to set up themselves—it's not like Carbonite or some other backup solutions where the user pushes a magic play-mobile button and derp derp derp the cloud, but a technical person can manage this easily. There are cloud options, but I prefer to host the BDR servers to clients on my own resources, and I think technical folks can do this without involving the big data companies.

Across most of our customers. We use it as a great/reliable backup tool.
  • Easy interface which makes setting up/restoring backups easy.
  • Light weight and doesn't slow down the network.
  • Great customer support team who is quick to answer/resolve issues.
  • Vague failure messages make troubleshooting hard sometimes.
Well suited for small/medium businesses for nightly backups. Would rather use a more onsite utility for larger offices.
